Day 9 removing the fan light from the lounge

And what a job that was!

Andy and I thought it would be a nice simple job. 

Step 1 - unscrew ceiling fan from its fitting. Easy. 

Step 2 - unscrew fitting from ceiling rose. Funny looking bolt with no screwdriver line down the middle. Puzzling. 

Step 3 - go to bedroom and lift up floorboard to try to find other end of bolt. But not there! We also discover that our ceiling is made of lath & plaster and we discover electric wires which seem in good shape. 

Step 4 - back to lounge and spend a good hour hacking into ceiling rose,turning the fitting round and round and unsticking the ceiling rose from the room, but the bolt is immovable.

Step 5- back to bedroom to look under floorboard and voila, we were looking at the wrong end. We find said bolt, attached to joist via a metal bracket. Very firmly attached as the ceiling fan was heavy as was the ceiling rose (made of plaster). 

Step 6 - unscrew bolt! Very tough!  (Can see lath and plaster in background, joists and also electric cables).

Step 7 - ceiling rose falls (luckily I was there to catch it).

Step 8 - bad news! They have made a big hole in our ceiling so only small strips of lath to attach simple lightbulb fitting. And it is very insecure! #

What a job! Took ages!

Looks like the electricians will need to reinvestigate this and the plasterer to make the hole good.
