We did it! We took the lounge carpet off!!!!
You can see that the floor is mostly okay, although the floorboards are worn and torn.
There is poor fitting around the radiator where you can see the underlay.
You can't see that a 50cm border around the room was where they placed glue to stick the carpet on the floor.
We hoovered and used bleach to mop the floor and then rinsed with water. The glue will not come off easily. We tried using some super solvent to remove some of the glue which kind of worked.
We think this will hugely improve the smell, come back here tomorrow....
Landing and Stairs carpet:
We went to 2 carpet shops, which are big superstores. The first, Carpetright, gave us a quote on the Almond Heather Park Lane , but they cannot fit it until January. The price was £370 as they have a half price sale on this range.
The second shop, SCS, quoted us around £400-450 with much more detail from the salesperson on the Patriot range:
Finally, on wooden flooring we are thinking on getting engineered wood. We think we should get for the lounge, bottom of stairs, entrance hall (estimated area around 23m2) and the bedroom (12m2), so a total of approximately 35m2.
We have found ukflooringdirect and are thinking the following:
1) Oak lacquer in bedroom, £26 per m2 = £335 (second one down in pic below):
2) 3strip european oak downstairs, £18 per m2 = £365
This does not include underlay (which ain't too expensive), edging scotia or boundaries or fitting cost (approx £15 per m2).
